Get a paternity test

A paternity test is a must when there is any doubt about a child’s parentage. The tests can save a man from paying an exorbitant amount of child support for a child who should technically be supported by somebody else. A paternity test can also give a father the legal evidence needed to pursue custody if he so desires. In some cases, a person’s heritage can provide valuable information about serious medical conditions. Establishing paternity can help determine what medical tests are necessary.

A paternity test is relatively simple to complete. A cotton swab is rubbed inside the cheek of the father, mother and child in question. A lab technician will generally do the swab to ensure there each participant is who they say they are. However, mail in options allow each individual to collect the swab themselves in the comfort of their own home.

It is virtually impossible for a person to alter the test results
. Drinking or eating before the swab will not affect the outcome. Depending on the lab, test results are usually available within two to six weeks. The results are kept confidential and only released to the parties directly involved, unless other arrangements have been made.

Paternity tests can be completed without the mother’s swab if necessary. If the alleged father is unavailable for testing, a family member may be tested to determine a familial relationship. The test results are almost always admissible in court and can help establish custody, visitation and child support obligations. Sometimes paternity must be established to satisfy inheritance requirements. The results can also provide peace of mind for a father who has doubts.
